Questions
What owners ask us
What do I need to start?
A photo of your menu, or the web address of the one on your website. That is all, and you do not need to type anything in.
What does the free plan actually give me?
One restaurant, one menu, one language, and the whole of the public side: your menu page at its own web address, your QR code and the poster you print it on, allergen and dietary information on every dish, six of the ready-made designs, and the Visits screen with its email digest.
No card, no trial clock. What it does not include is reading a menu from a photo once you are signed in, a second language, a second menu, timed offers, automatic translation and photo advice. Those are what a subscription buys.
Can I try it before I sign up?
Yes. Photograph up to two pages of your menu and we read them and write them up on the spot, with no account and nothing to pay. The result is a preview and it is kept for seven days.
If you want to keep it, create an account and the menu we read comes with you. If you do not, it is deleted.
My menu is already on my website. Do I have to photograph it?
No. Paste the web address of that page and we read the menu from it instead. Everything after that is the same: you check what we read, then you publish it.
How long does it take?
Reading the menu takes a few moments. Checking what we read is the real work, and on a normal menu it is one sitting.
What if it reads my menu wrong?
Sometimes it will. Handwriting, chalkboards and bad photos are hard. We tested it on 33 real menus from 15 countries and it got things wrong on some of them.
That is why nothing goes public until you have checked it, and why a price we could not read is shown as missing rather than filled in with a guess.
Does this make me compliant?
No. No website can do that, and anyone who tells you otherwise is selling you something. It puts your allergen information in writing where your customers can read it.
What it says comes from your kitchen and stays your responsibility. Your public menu page says so as well.
I already have a QR menu from my card machine.
Then keep it, if it does what you need. Ask it to show a customer which dishes contain sesame, or to put the same menu in front of a guest reading Arabic, or to let you choose how the page looks. That is the part we do.
How do I know anyone is actually looking at it?
Your Visits screen tells you. How many people opened your menu over the last week, month or quarter, how that compares with the period before, whether they scanned the code on the table or followed your link, and which languages they read it in.
If you would rather not go looking, we can email it to you instead: every day, every week, every month, or never. You pick, and you can change your mind from any one of those emails.
How do I get the QR code onto my tables?
Press Print and you get a poster, not a file to puzzle over. Drag the code and your heading where you want them, size them to taste, pick a typeface, choose A4 or US Letter, and print it on the printer in your office. We mark the edge your printer cannot reach so nothing gets cut off.
What happens to my QR code when I change the menu?
Nothing. Your web address and your QR code stay the same. Print them once.
Can I run a special that stops on its own?
Yes, on Menu Growth and above. Pick the dishes, set the offer price, and give it a start and a finish. Your guests see the old price crossed out next to the new one, and when the finish time comes it goes back to the normal price without you doing anything.
Can my evening or seasonal menu go live by itself?
Yes, on Menu Growth and above, which is where a second menu starts. Build it, then say which day and time it takes over and when it should hand back. The swap happens while you are on the floor, and the QR code on your tables does not change.
Does my menu have to look like everybody else's?
No. There is a range of ready-made designs, we keep adding to it, and you can change which one you are on whenever you like, as often as you like. Some of them are on every plan, the free one included; the rest come on Menu Growth and above.
They are real page shapes, not colour swaps: a gilt-framed card with dotted leaders to the price, a dark luxe card with gold rules, a botanical garden card, autumn and Christmas seasonal boards, a magazine page, a chalkboard, a retro diner, a centred tasting card, a photo grid, a dense single page, and an app-style list with search and sticky sections. Every one of them is then yours to edit, down to the typeface and the colours.
How many languages can I put my menu in?
Arabic, Danish, Dutch, English, French, German, Italian, Norwegian, Portuguese, Spanish and Swedish today, and we keep adding more. Arabic reads right to left and the whole page turns round with it.
How many you can switch on at once is what your plan decides: one on the free plan, up to every one we offer on the largest. On Menu Growth and above, we translate the menu for you and you check it before it goes out; otherwise you can type a translation in yourself.
Are the allergen names translated too?
In every language we offer except Arabic, English among them. They are written out by hand, not machine translated, because a mistranslated allergen name is a safety failure rather than a typo.
Arabic is the one we have not written yet. A guest reading it sees your dishes in Arabic and the allergen names in English, and we would rather say so here than pretend otherwise.
My photos are not very good. Does that matter?
Less than you think, and we will tell you when it does. Ask for photo advice on a dish and we say whether the picture is too dark, too blurred, too low in resolution or too busy behind the food, and which of seven corrections suits it. The correction itself is applied in your own browser.
Photo advice comes on Menu Starter and above, with a set number of photos a month.
Do you work with restaurant groups and chains?
Yes. One account runs every restaurant in the group, each with its own menu, web address and QR code, on one bill: up to 25 restaurants on Menu Group.
Above that, Counter Admin for Chains sets the limits to the size of your estate, invoices instead of taking a card, and gives you a named person to email. It starts from £149 a month, billed annually, and the price is in our first reply.
Does this replace my till?
No. It is your menu, not your till. It does not take orders and it does not take payments.
Who can see my menu before I publish it?
Only you. Nothing has a public address until you publish it, and a menu we read for you before you had an account is deleted if you never claim it.
